Boussinesq Modeling of Alongshore Swash Zone Currents
نویسنده
چکیده
The study involves theoretical formulation, model development and verification, and integration with field observations of swash motions. The starting point of the theoretical formulation is the Euler equation of motion for waves and currents above the permeable seabed and the locally-averaged Navier-Stokes equations for the flow inside the porous layer. A complete set of fully nonlinear Boussinesq-type equations for waves and currents over a permeable beach is developed. Particular attention is paid to the conservation property of potential vorticity and the poor performance of preexisting equations when the ratio of the porous layer thickness to the water depth is large. Stokes-type analyses are carried out to examine the dispersion and damping properties of the new set of equations.

Swashzone Fluid Velocities
The overall objective of these projects is to improve models for fluid velocities in the swash zone. Although runup excursions and cross-shore swashzone velocities owing to random waves on a natural beach are predicted well by a model (Rbreak) based on the vertically-averaged nonlinear shallow water equations with quadratic bottom friction (Kobayashi et al. 1989, Raubenheimer et al. 1995, Raube...

[1] Spur and groove (SAG) formations are found on the fore reefs of many coral reefs worldwide. Although these formations are primarily present in wave-dominated environments, their effect on wave-driven hydrodynamics is not well understood. A twodimensional, depth-averaged, phase-resolving nonlinear Boussinesq model (funwaveC) was used to model hydrodynamics on a simplified SAG system. The mod...

The Makran Coast (Iranian Coastline of the Oman Sea on the Northern Indian Ocean) plays an important role in country’s future navigation and trade due to its accessibility. In 2014, the Iranian Makran coastline was selected by the PMO to be studied as the Phase 6 in the series of Monitoring and Modelling Studies of Iranian Coasts with all disciplines being in investigated including currents. Al...
متن کاملVortical surf zone velocity fluctuations with 0(10) min period
[1] Observations of velocity fluctuations with periods between about 4 and 30 min, thus longer than infragravity waves and referred to as very low frequency (VLF) surf zone motions, are described and compared with numerical simulations. The VLF motions discussed here exclude instabilities (generated by the wave‐driven alongshore current velocity shear) that occur in the same frequency range by ...
متن کاملDynamics of freshwater plumes: observations and numerical modeling of the wind-forced response and alongshore freshwater transport by
A plume often results when a river discharges fresh water into the nearshore waters. This thesis combines both hydrographic data and idealized numerical simulations to examine how ambient currents and winds influence the transport and mixing of plume waters. The alongshore transport of freshwater is studied using a numerical model. In the absence of ambient currents, the downstream coastal curr...
